On Sunday, July 31, UFC 277: PENA vs. NUNES 2 at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, was broadcast live throughout Asia. A fight card that included first-round knockouts and a five-round main event of epic resolve perfectly captured the joy of triumph and sorrow of defeat.
Amanda Nunes recaptures the UFC Bantamweight title
In a rematch against former champion Amanda Nunes, Julianna Pena successfully made her first title defence. Pena applied pressure and landed combos in the first and second rounds, but Nunes answered with powerful right hooks that resulted in many knockdowns. Nunes pushed with takedowns, ground dominance, and cutting elbows in a gruelling third, fourth, and fifth round as tough Pena worked for submissions from the bottom. After a lengthy battle, Nunes saw her hand raised in triumph and the belt handed back to her.
"When the Lioness didn't get the belt for the first time, I'd train better and get it the second time. Now, we are here, making history again, double champ again! In my gym, I feel like I'm safe, I can grow even more. I wasn't ready before, but I went back and evolved,” she said after the win.
Brandon Moreno wins Interim Flyweight title
The stakes were significantly higher as former UFC flyweight champion Brandon Moreno fought #2 Kai Kara-France for the second time while wearing an interim championship. After a measured first round, Moreno's pressure in the second round increased. With a sweep and precise striking, Kara-France made a comeback in the third round, but Moreno's liver kick at the conclusion of the round knocked her out, giving Moreno the TKO victory.
"What precision, I love that kick. Since I lost the title, I've been working on those kicks, working to be a complete mixed martial artist. And today, I can grab this again. It's amazing,” Moreno said after the win.
Three quick finishes in the main event of UFC 277 made the night fly by. With a TKO victory over Anthony Smith, Magomed Ankalaev elevated himself to the top of the light heavyweight class. With a quick standing choke to finish Alex Perez in the first round, Alexandre Pantoja prepared himself to contend for the flyweight crown in the future.
At just 55 seconds into the first round, Derrick Lewis was struck and knocked down by Sergei Pavlovich, necessitating the intervention of the referee.
