In the main event of Bellator 291 in Dublin, Yaroslav Amosov fought the fight of his life, unifying championships with a convincing decision victory against interim champion Logan Storley on Saturday night.
In 2022, Amosov put his career on hold to protect his country Ukraine against the Russian invasion; in the meanwhile, Storley won the championship. Over two and a half years after their initial match, Amosov showed improved play upon his return to action and took Storley apart for five rounds.
Amosov easily defended Storley's takedown in the third round, clipping him on the feet and rocking him twice in rounds three and four. This was enough for Amosov to win a decision and emerge as the top 170-pound fighter on the Bellator roster.
“One year ago yesterday, crazy [Vladimir] Putin started a big war in my country. He wants to kill kids and every person who is Ukrainian. Thank you to the Ukrainian army for defending my country, thank you to whoever helped my country. Please don’t forget what’s happening,” Amosov noted after the win.
The previous two matches provided no cause for celebration for the normally raucous Irish audience. Pedro Carvalho, a Portuguese fighter who moved to Ireland years ago after joining the SBG squad, was unable to stop Jeremy Kennedy's grappling in the co-main event and spent the majority of the fight on the ground. Kennedy defeated Patricio Pitbull, the featherweight champion, by unanimous decision.
