ONE 156: Eersel vs. Sadikovic was headlined by two World Title tussles at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on Friday, 22 April, and both thrilling bouts went the distance.
Surinamese-Dutch powerhouse Regian Eersel fought to retain his ONE Lightweight Kickboxing World Title against German warrior Arian Sadikovic in the evening’s main event, while teen sensation Smilla Sundell battled Filipina-American superstar Jackie Buntan for five rounds to bring home the inaugural ONE Women’s Strawweight Muay Thai World Title in the co-main.
Eersel, also known as “The Immortal,” had his toughest battle thus far in the ONE Circle when he squared off with Sadikovic. The challenger almost lived up to his moniker, “Game Over,” when he landed a heavy knee that toppled the ONE World Champion in the second round. Eersel appeared to be at risk of ending his six-year unbeaten run as he struggled to answer the referee’s eight-count.
However, the 29-year-old superstar showed his mettle and dug deep to come back swinging. He proceeded to spend the remainder of the bout chopping Sadikovic’s legs with low kicks and landing jumping knees to the face of his opposite man. In the end, his efforts led him to a unanimous victory, and he retained his belt for the fourth time.
The co-main event was a damaging affair, as Sundell faced the intense pressure of Jackie Buntan, who was undefeated in the Circle going into their World Championship bout. The California resident started the stronger of the two, and she was able to dictate much of Sundell’s movements. Yet, as time passed, the Swedish fighter proved why she is “The Hurricane” and started a storm of trouble for Buntan. The young athlete kept Buntan close in the clinch and made it difficult for her to use her characteristic footwork to evade strikes.
As the fight reached the championship rounds, Sundell continued to utilize her reach to full advantage, causing noticeable damage to her foe. When all was said and done, Sundell walked away with the inaugural ONE Women’s Strawweight Muay Thai World Title, making history by becoming the youngest titleholder in the organization’s history at 17 years old.
In addition to all the action, Eersel, Sundell, and Mikey Musumeci all received US$50,000 performance bonuses, while Liam Harrison walked away with a whopping US$100,000 for his showing against Muangthai.
