UFC Featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski has revealed that he will be serving as the backup for UFC 280 main event. Volkanovski revealed the same through his Twitter page and noted that he has got the clearance to fight.

“We’re locked in as the backup fighter. I’ve been calling for it, I said I wanted it. I just had to make sure the hand was all good. We’re all good, got the clearance to fight. The UFC’s on board, everyone’s on board so I’ll be at UFC 280 to make weight and looking forward to it,” Volkanovski noted.

The UFC 280 main event will see Charles Oliveira going up against Islam Makhachev for the UFC Lightweight title. It is hands down one of the most anticipated fights in recent UFC history and the stakes are high.

Volkanovski, who has been dominating the UFC Featherweight division for a long time, had earlier expressed his interest in moving to Lightweight. Serving as backup for the UFC 280 main event is likely to be the first step towards the weight class change.

“Let’s see what happens. If someone doesn’t make it, I’m there to save the day. If not, at least I’m locked in as the next guy to fight for that lightweight title and that’s that,” he added.

Volkanovski was last seen against Max Holloway. He had won the fight after a five-round fight in which he had also suffered a hand injury. The doctors, however, has cleared him to compete which will be a big boost for the Featherweight champion.
