UFC returned with UFC 294 today. The event was headlined by the UFC Lightweight title fight between Islam Makhachev and Alexander Volkanovski.
The main event did not last long as Islam Makhachev landed a huge head kick in the first round to finish Alexander Volkanovski. The starting minutes of the fight saw both fighters feeling out each other but Islam wasted no time in landing a huge head kick which not only dropped Volkanovski but also cut him.
In the co-main event, Kamaru Usman and Khamzat Chimaev delivered big time. Usman, who took the fight on short notice, brought the fight to Khamzat. Khamzat had a good start and almost got a finish in the first round. However, Usman proved to be resilient and came back stronger in the rounds that followed. In the end, the fight was ruled in favor of Khamzat via a Majority Decision. After the fight, Khamzat Chimaev also gave a speech about how the children across the world are being harmed.
The fight between Magomed Ankalaev and Johnny Walker had plenty of drama. Magomed landed an illegal knee to the head of Johnny Walker midway through the first-round which halted the action. The doctor then announced that Walker was not cleared to continue which was a decision that did not sit well with Walker and Magomed. Some unexpected incidents followed inside the cage before things cooled down and the fight was ruled as a no-contest.
The main card started with Said Nurmagomedov making quick work of Muin Gaurov. Said secured a first-round submission win to continue his good run in the UFC.
Ikram Aliskerov also ended matters quickly in his fight against Warlley Alves with a first-round stoppage win. In the prelims, the much-awaited debut of India’s Anshul Jubli happened. Anshul was cruising in the first two rounds in his bout against Mike Breeden but it was the experience of Breeden that proved to be the difference. The American managed to change the course of the fight in the third round and finished Anshul to get a win.
