The semi-finals of the IBA Men's World Boxing Championships are almost here and all eyes are on Nishant Dev (71 kg). The Haryana native has been on a tear and has already secured a medal, but fans will be hoping that he returns with gold. He has already made history as the first Indian boxer to defeat a Cuban in the Men's World Championship.
Nishant began his boxing career in 2012, encouraged by his uncle, a professional fighter. Surender Chauhan, his committed coach, helped him develop his talents at the Karan Stadium. Nishant's unrelenting commitment and passion for the sport were on display as he relentlessly practised with his father.
Nishant, like his idol Floyd Mayweather, demonstrated his courage and great boxing talents during his debut international tournament, the 2021 World Championships. Laszlo Kozak, a nine-time National Champion from Hungary, and two-time Olympian Merven Clair from Mauritius were among his formidable opponents. Nishant's adventure ended in the quarter-finals, but his outstanding performance left a lasting impression.
Pawan Kumar, Nishant's father, expressed his joy and hope for his son as he advanced to the semi-finals of the IBA Men's Boxing Championship.
"I wish Nishant all the best for the upcoming semi-final and final in the World Men's Boxing Championship. His dedication, perseverance, and indomitable spirit have been inspiring. I believe in his abilities, and I am confident that he will bring home the gold medal.”
“The previous shoulder injury resurfaced in 2022 but he persevered to come back, Nishant underwent surgery and embarked on an extensive rehabilitation process. His determination has paid off. I would also like to thank Inspire Institute of Sport for the role they played in training him," Kumar said.
