Former world champions Joshua Pacio, Eduard Folayang, Kevin Belingon, and Honorio Banario, in his opinion, made a mistake by quitting Team Lakay, according to ONE strawweight champion Jarred Brooks.
Last month, when they each separately announced their departure from the stable, the four former world champions shocked the local mixed martial arts industry. Brooks didn't need to make the move because he had already defeated Pacio to earn the gold-plated strap in December.
“I think they realize after I beat Joshua that they needed a change, but that was not necessarily that change that was going to happen. Because guess what? With Joshua, I am already ahead of him in the landscape,” Brooks said in an interview (h/t GMA Network).
He also went on to add that it was not the right move from the former fighters to leave Team Lakay.
“I do not think it was the right move. I am a loyal person. I understand there is a fault in being loyal, but you have a team. That is [where] family and home. Hopefully, they realize that. At least have Mark [Sangiao] in his corner in his next fight,” he added.
Brooks had a heated rivalry with Team Lakay ahead of his fight with Joshua Pacio. Brooks ended up outclassing Pacio to become the ONE Strawweight champion. Prior to this, he had also secured a win over Lito Adiwang in ONE Championship.
Brooks added that instead of leaving the team, they should have travelled together as a team to learn new things.
“Exactly, it can [be learned within Team Lakay] all they to do is travel as a team. Make regional training centers,” Brooks noted.
