Former UFC fighter Chael Sonnen believes that Gregor Gillespie would have beaten Khabib Nurmagomedov if a match between the two ever happened.
Sonnen quoted the same during one of his YouTube segments and noted that Gillespie had all the skills required to outclass the Russian superstar.
“When I would have private conversations… people would ask me all the time, is there anyone that could beat Khabib. Who’s the guy that can stop Khabib and in private conversations I would say we actually have a guy now. He’s 11-0, he’s a national wrestling champion, nobody’s ever come close to taking him down, he’s taken absolutely everybody down, oh, and by the way, he can hold up,” Sonnen said (h/t MMA News).

He further went on to reveal why he did not say such a thing publically.
“One thing that Khabib could do was push a pace that was much higher than what the opponent could push back. (Gregor) made his living getting people tired. That’s how highly I personally think of him. Now in all fairness, I did not do that publicly but the reason I didn’t do that publicly was you didn’t know what a Gregor Gillespie was,” he added.
Gillespie, who is based out of the United States, holds a professional MMA record of 14-1 to his name with his only loss coming to Kevin Lee via a head-kick knockout. He started with the UFC back in 2016 and has won seven fights in the promotion. He is undefeated outside the UFC as well having started his career back in 2014.
