Conor McGregor could be getting his hands on a UFC title fight when he returns to the promotion. Dana White revealed the possibility during his recent interview with The Underground and said that the chances of McGregor getting a title shot will depend on the champion.
“It’s gonna depend on who the champion is. The champion has some say in that, too. Who’s gonna be the champ when Conor McGregor comes back? And what do they wanna do? If you look at [Charles] Oliveira, right... if it’s still Oliveira by the time he comes back, maybe Oliveira wants Conor. Who knows? I don’t know. We’ll see what happens,” White said [via MMA Fighting].
Current champion Charles Oliveira has already expressed his interest in fighting McGregor. The Brazilian, however, will have to pass the challenge posed by Justin Gaethje who is set to challenge Oliveira at UFC 274 in May 7. Interestingly, Islam Makhachev has also entered the conversation and asked for the winner of Oliveira and Gaethje.
Dana White further went on to add that there are a lot of variables that needs to come together for McGregor’s return.
“There’s a lot of variables that have to come together for him to come back and fight. No. 1 is health and how’s his leg. Then once that’s 100 percent then we’ll start to figure out where he goes. Because a lot of these — we have fights made all the way up to June 18 already. Once he’s 100 percent ready to go, we’ll get him figured out and we’ll see what’s what with the lightweight division and we’ll get him figured out,” he added.
McGregor has been out of action for some time now following the injury that he picked up during his fight against Dustin Poirier last year.
