2022 IMMAF Asian MMA Championship: Team India secures four medals
30 October 2022Team India secured a total of four medals at the 2022 IMMAF Asian MMA Championship 2022 which was held in Tajikistan. The team secured three bronze medals and one silver medal. The bronze medals came in the senior category while the silver medal came in the junior category.
The first medal of the campaign came thanks to Shabarish Ayyanar who confirmed the medal by entering the semi-finals of the Senior Men’s Strawweight category with a decision win in the quarter-finals.
Shabarish, who had earlier impressed everyone at the IMMAF World Championship, went up against Kazakhstan’s Yerulan Kabdulov in the semi-finals and suffered a stoppage loss. Shabarish had a good showing in the fight but was dropped by Kabdulov in the closing minutes of the fight. Kabdulov eventually went on to secure the Gold Medal in the bracket.
Former IMMAF Junior World Champion Mahboob Khan secured the second bronze medal for Team India when he entered the semi-finals of the Flyweight category with a split decision win in the quarter-finals. Mahboob was also pitted up against the eventual gold medal winner in the semi-finals, Muhammad Salohiddinov. Salohiddinov was able to edge out Mahboob with his grappling skills and eventually won the semi-final fight via a decision.
Khushboo Nishad secured the third bronze medal for India in the Female Atomweight category. She fought Kazakhstan’s Tuimegul Zhunis in the semi-finals and delivered a solid performance. It was Zhunis, however, that came out on top via the Judges’ decision.
In the Junior Female Lightweight category, Tanishkaa Bhansali went up against Ugiloy Jumanova in the finals and suffered a first-round TKO loss. Tanishkaa, who got a bye in the semi-finals could not withstand the offence that Jumanova mounted and the referee had to step in to stop the fight. Despite the loss, Tanishkaa was awarded the silver medal.
Earlier, Ramston Rodrigues had also secured a win for Team India at the Asian Championship. Ramston, however, could not get past the quarter-finals and secure a medal. You can see the medal winners list below.
