IMMAF Asian MMA Championship 2022: Ramston Rodrigues picks up a win for India

Team India started off their campaign at the IMMAF Asian MMA Championship 2022 on a bittersweet note as the team had one win and one loss on Day 1.

In the Featherweight category for Seniors, India’s Mayur Chandra Prasad went up against Mohammad Javad Kayedgap of Iran. Mayur had some good moments on striking and seemed to be in control for a second when things went to the ground. However, the grappling skills of Javad came into play soon and he was able to lock in Mayur into a guillotine to secure a submission win.

Elsewhere, Ramston Rodrigues secured the first win for Team India at the IMMAF Asian MMA championship when he went up against Lebanon’s Ghady Assaf. Ramston, who had made headlines for training alongside former UFC champion Conor McGregor, secured a decision win in his fight and progressed to the next round.

With his win, he is now in the quarter-finals of the Middleweight bracket and will now fight Hazeem Kayyali of Team Jordan on Day 2. Another win could guarantee a medal for India which raises the stake for his upcoming fight.

Apart from Ramston, four other Indian fighters will be in action on Day 2 of the IMMAF Asian MMA Championship. Shabarish Ayyanar, who impressed at the IMMAF World Championships, will be looking to continue his momentum when he fights Bakhtiyor Tolibov of Tajikistan in the quarter-finals of the Strawweight division.

Former Junior World Champion Mahboob Khan will also be in action on Day 2 for India. Mahboob will be going up against Gururbek Rakhmatov of Team Uzbekistan in the Flyweight quarter-finals. Varun Sanyal will be fighting in the Welterweight quarter-finals against Jovidon Mahmudov when Ankit Yalamanchilli will go up against Yersultan Shakenbay of Kazakhstan in the quarter-finals of the Junior Flyweight category.
