UFC Vegas 97, held on September 7, 2024, was marked by controversy over officiating. In a Strawweight bout between Jaqueline Amorim and Vanessa Demopoulos, concerns arose over unaddressed fouls. Amorim, who extended her winning streak to three with a first-round armbar submission, was accused by Demopoulos of grabbing inside her gloves, a violation in mixed martial arts (MMA). Despite the claim, no penalty was enforced, and the fight continued, culminating in Amorim's victory.
Demopoulos' Reaction
Following the fight, Demopoulos expressed her frustration in an Instagram post. She announced her disappointment with the officiating and hinted at appealing the result to the Nevada Athletic Commission (NAC).
“Don’t know what to say about this weekend other than how disappointed I am in others,” Demopoulos wrote. “What you can never take away from me is my spirit, my will, and my faith. Back to sparring, back to training, and back to being the badass I always have been.”
She also thanked her supporters and acknowledged the visible nature of the alleged foul. “Thank you to everyone who’s stuck up for me. We all witnessed what happened, no need for me to explain what is so obvious in slow motion. On to more incredible things. Interesting journey. That’s the fun part about life,” she added.
