UFC returned with UFC Vegas 72 this past weekend. Song Yadong proved why he deserved to compete in the main event for the second time in a row. Brilliant striking, astute tactics and a great performance against a tough opponent in Ricky Simon set up the top ten bantamweight's chance to become China's first male UFC champion.
Song Yadong and #10 in the bantamweight rankings Ricky Simon was very aware of the stakes and played a very measured first round. Throughout the remaining rounds, they increased the level of engagement, with Song demonstrating his striking acumen and excellent timing and Simon executing his shoots. Song knocked Simon out at the end of the fourth round and finished him with great force in the fifth.
"I'm so happy, I'm extremely happy tonight! Ricky is a very tough opponent but tonight is my night. Next, I want to fight a top five fighter! Sean O'Malley! Or Chito Vera, you want a rematch?,” he said after the fight.
Caio Borralho and Michal Oleksiejczuk, both rising middleweights, delivered the expected all-action displays. Oleksiejczuk applied pressure, pushing Borralho to defend and think creatively. Borralho moved straight to his Brazilian jiujitsu in the second round and won through rear naked choke submission.
"I knew he was coming very hard. But my corner said 'He's tired' and that's when I got him. Did you like my performance? My double leg (takedown) is the best in UFC! I have the best team in the world - the fighting nerds. This is the fighting nerds takeover!,” he added.
