No. 7 ranked welterweight contender Ian Machado Garry showcased grit and tactical discipline to secure a unanimous decision win over No. 13 Carlos Prates in the main event of UFC Fight Night on Sunday at the T-Mobile Center.
Garry controlled the early rounds with sharp movement and striking, limiting Prates’ offensive output. The Brazilian rallied in the final two rounds, including a late knockdown in the fifth, but Garry held on to win on the judges’ scorecards (48-47, 48-47, 49-46).
"I was conscious of every moment on how dangerous that man is,” Garry said post-fight. “He's been on a tear, but I told everyone I was going to class him, and I believe I did that.”
Garry also revealed he will serve as the official backup for the upcoming UFC welterweight title fight in Canada and reiterated his desire to challenge for the belt next.
In the co-main event, Zhang Mingyang spoiled Anthony Smith’s retirement fight with a brutal first-round TKO. Zhang landed a slicing elbow that opened a cut, then poured on strikes to finish the former title challenger at 4:03 of Round 1. With the win, Zhang is expected to enter the light heavyweight top 15 rankings.
“Hey, boo me again,” Zhang said to the crowd. “Even if you don’t know, now you know!”
The event drew a sold-out crowd of 15,984 and generated a record-breaking $2.2 million gate for a sports event at the T-Mobile Center.
