UFC returned with UFC Abu Dhabi this weekend and the event featured plenty of action.

The main event between Umar Nurmagomedov and Cory Sandhagen delivered as expected. Both fighters delivered one of the most technical fights of the year which went the complete distance of five rounds, earning appreciation everyone that tune in. A good portion of the fight went down in standing much to the surprise of many when the ground exchanges were dominated by Umar as expected. In the end, Umar got the much deserved win via a decision.

Shara Magomedov showcased his striking prowess in the co-main event against Michal Oleksiejczuk on Saturday, earning a unanimous decision victory and the best win of his career. Demonstrating his quick kicks and diverse Muay Thai technique, the middleweight from Dagestan overwhelmed the Polish veteran in Abu Dhabi. Magomedov out-landed Oleksiejczuk in all three rounds, leaving his opponent bloodied by the end.

The judges scored the bout unanimously in favor of the 30-year-old Magomedov, marking his third consecutive win in the UFC. With this impressive performance, Magomedov is likely to face tougher competition in his next outing. Conversely, Oleksiejczuk has now suffered three straight losses and has lost four of his last five fights.

The battle between ranked strawweights Mackenzie Dern and Loopy Godinez was as entertaining as expected, with the former ADCC Submission Wrestling world champion securing a unanimous decision victory. Dern looked her best in the opening round, landing heavy shots on the feet before showcasing her skills on the canvas, threatening with a deep armbar. Godinez battled back in the second round, tightening her striking and taking Dern to the mat, finishing the round locked onto a standing arm triangle choke. The third round was competitive and close, with both fighters having positive moments on the feet, making the verdict difficult to forecast.

When the scorecards were totaled, Dern emerged on the positive side, getting back into the win column after suffering consecutive losses last year. For Godinez, it’s a second straight setback and a third defeat to an opponent ranked ahead of her.

Michael Chiesa won the battle of The Ultimate Fighter winners, submitting Tony Ferguson in the opening round to halt a three-fight losing streak. The two veterans were cautious with each other early, pawing at one another from range, looking for opportunities to land. Midway through the round, Chiesa dipped inside, got his hands locked around Ferguson, and took him to the canvas, instantly attacking the neck. After securing the position, it was only a matter of time before “Maverick” collected the tap.

This was a significant win for the Spokane, Washington, native after a tough run of results and injuries over the last couple of years. Following the contest, Ferguson took off his gloves, potentially signaling the end of his career after suffering an eighth straight loss.

Deiveson Figueiredo continued his march up the bantamweight ranks Saturday, earning a unanimous decision win over recent title challenger Marlon “Chito” Vera. In all three rounds, Figueiredo was the more active and effective fighter, showing the diversity of his attack in the first and second rounds by mixing wrestling into his striking assault. Content to stand in the third, the former flyweight champion dropped Vera with a sharp right hand midway through the round before maintaining control through to the final horn.

Now 3-0 since transitioning to the 135-pound weight category, “Deus da Guerra” has quickly established himself as a legitimate championship threat in his new division.
