Allycia Hellen Rodrigues has fought through more than just an opponent to get to this moment.
The ONE Women's Atomweight Muay Thai World Champion puts her 26 pounds of gold on the line against Phetjeeja in the main event of The Inner Circle 19 on June 19, broadcasting on live.onefc.com, and the road to this fight has been far from straightforward.
The Brazilian mom-champ and the Thai were originally scheduled to clash in March this year, but injuries to both fighters forced the fight off the card. For Rodrigues, the setback was more serious than a simple knock.
"I ended up having inflammation in both of my legs, which was preventing me from running, kicking, or doing anything that created impact. I had to take about a month and a half off," she said.
The 28-year-old Brazilian has battled back, and she arrives at The Inner Circle 19 carrying a 35-7 career record and a 5-1 ONE record, undefeated in the atomweight Muay Thai division and chasing her fifth successful title defense.
Standing across from her is a challenger who has not lost inside the ONE ring. Phetjeeja, 24, carries a breathtaking 210-6 career striking record and a perfect 8-0 ONE record.
The Team Mehdi Zatout product is chasing a second ONE World Title and the status of two-sport queen, making her the most motivated challenger Rodrigues has faced to date. Despite the emergence of new talent in the division, Rodrigues is clear-eyed about where this fight sits in the bigger picture.
"There are always talented new girls coming up, but regardless of what happens, I see her and me as the best in the division," she explained.
The stakes on June 19 are enormous, but for Rodrigues, this fight also marks the beginning of a new chapter rather than just the next defense of her reign.
"After this fight, my focus will return to MMA. I believe my next fight will be my MMA debut. I'm very excited for this new journey as well," she added.
