Spain Prime Minister promises to give Spanish Citizenship to Ilia Topuria

Ilia Topuria, dubbed "El Matador," is experiencing a whirlwind of success this month, marked by a series of remarkable achievements both inside and outside the octagon.

After stunning the world by clinching the UFC featherweight championship with a knockout victory over Alexander Volkanovski two Saturdays ago, Topuria continued his momentous streak with a prestigious appearance at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium, where he conducted the honorary kickoff for the Real Madrid vs. Sevilla game.

Adding to his list of accolades, Topuria had the honor of meeting with Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Tuesday, proudly showcasing his newly acquired UFC belt during the encounter. Sanchez, impressed by Topuria's triumph, took to social media to extend his congratulations and pledged to facilitate Topuria's Spanish citizenship.

"Your effort, dedication, perseverance have made you achieve your dream," Sanchez expressed in a heartfelt message. "The second one will soon become a reality. Your love for Spain will be reflected on your Spanish National identity document."

Born in Germany to Georgian parents, Topuria has called Spain home since his teenage years. His journey in mixed martial arts began at Climent Club in Alicante, where he honed his skills under the guidance of the Climent brothers, eventually embarking on a successful amateur and professional career. Currently residing in Alicante with his family, Topuria's ascent to UFC glory has been a source of pride for the Spanish MMA community.

Topuria's historic victory at UFC 298 not only secured him the featherweight title but also made him the first fighter to defeat Volkanovski in the 145-pound division, maintaining his undefeated record in the process.

While plans for Topuria's first title defense are yet to be finalized, UFC CEO Dana White has expressed keen interest in staging the event in Spain, a milestone that would mark a significant moment for both Topuria and the promotion.
