Indian boxers Nupur, Jaismine Lamboria, and Sakshi delivered standout performances to win gold medals at the World Boxing Cup Astana 2025, helping India finish with a total of 11 medals, including three gold, five silver and three bronze.
Nupur captured the gold medal in the women’s 80+kg category, defeating Kazakhstan’s Yeldana Talipova with a dominant 5-0 unanimous decision in the final. Despite losing the opening round to the home favorite, Nupur rebounded strongly, controlling the remaining two rounds with precise punches and strategic movement.
“On July 6, we had our finals of the World Cup in Kazakhstan. I won the gold medal in the 80kg plus category, and it was a great feeling,” Nupur told ANI. “My final fight was with a girl from the host nation. She is currently ranked No. 2 in the world and recently won a silver at the world championship. People there are very passionate about boxing. Like people in India support cricket, they should also support boxing.”
In the 57kg category final, Jaismine Lamboria used her reach and tactical awareness to edge past Brazil’s Jucielen Cequeira Romeu by a 4-1 decision. The 23-year-old, facing a close contest through the first two rounds, stayed disciplined in the third to secure the win through counterattacks and defensive control.
“At the World Cup hosted in Kazakhstan, I represented India and performed very well and won the gold medal for the nation,” said Jaismine. “I fought around four fights; in the finals only, the decision was coming like 3-2. But according to the strategy told by the coach, the bout came in our favor.”
Sakshi rounded out India’s trio of champions with a unanimous 5-0 victory over USA’s Yosline Perez in the 54kg final. Displaying relentless aggression, Sakshi overwhelmed her American opponent to earn the judges' full support.
“It is a very good feeling; it was a very good competition,” Sakshi said. “There were many tough girls, and I won all the bouts by 5-0. The toughest fight that I had was with the USA, but I won all the bouts by a unanimous decision. In my weight category, many girls were Olympic medalists, so it was a good competition.”
India had previously secured six medals in the first leg of the World Boxing Cup held in Brazil, including one gold and one silver. The success in Astana marked a significant improvement and reinforced India’s growing strength in international boxing.
