Mixed martial arts fans are eagerly anticipating an announcement from former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion Conor McGregor, who teased on social media that details about his next UFC fight will be revealed on January 1, 2024.
Initially slated to face Michael Chandler following their coaching roles on The Ultimate Fighter, the matchup has faced delays, leaving uncertainty about whether Chandler will still be McGregor's opponent in the Octagon.
In a tweet on December 30, 2023, McGregor declared, "I will be announcing my fight date and opponent on New Years Day, 2024," accompanied by the tagline, "The Greatest Comeback in Sports History."
McGregor's last appearance in the UFC dates back to 2021, marked by two stoppage defeats to Dustin Poirier. In his most recent bout, the Irish fighter suffered a leg break, compelling him to undergo surgery and undergo an extensive rehabilitation process. Since his 40-second knockout victory over Donald Cerrone in January 2020, McGregor has not secured a win in a UFC bout.
During his recovery, McGregor temporarily left the USADA testing pool, necessitating six months of additional testing upon his return to be eligible to re-enter the octagon. Notably, starting in January 2024, USADA will no longer oversee UFC's drug tests, marking a transition in the organization's approach to anti-doping protocols.
As McGregor prepares to make his comeback, the MMA community awaits the New Year's Day revelation, hoping for insights into the anticipated fight date, opponent, and the much-anticipated return of "The Notorious" to the UFC stage
