UFC Fight Night Singapore: Here?s what you need to know

Press Release
26 October 2019

After an exciting weekend in which Dominick Reyes shocked the TD Garden crowd in Boston with a sensational first-round KO of former UFC Middleweight Champion, Chris Weidman, UFC is back with UFC Fight Night 162 this weekend at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

The main event features Demian Maia who will face off against Ben Askren in the Welterweight division and the co-main event will feature Michael Johnson and Stevie Ray compete in the Lightweight division.

Main Event- Demian Maia and Ben Askren

UFC returns to Singapore this weekend for the first time since June 2018 with a fight card that boasts the strongest grapplers - Demian Maia and Ben Askren. This fight would is poised to be a nail-biting contest between two premier grapplers of UFC’s Welterweight division and will deliver some severe ramifications in the division as well.

With his hard punches, splendid stamina and platinum moves, Ben Askren is among the few fighters who possesses a wide array of moves in his arsenal. He is coming off a defeat against Jorge Masvidal in UFC 239 but other than this dent on his career, Ben managed to successfully dispatch Robbie Lawler in the first round at UFC 235.

Demian Maia, on the other hand, has improved tremendously over the decade and is coming into this fight on the back of two-fight win streak. With experience and expertise in abundance, a winning strike is mandatory for both these fighters to lead them to the title fight in this division. While Maia is more pronounced as a grappler, Askren is a better wrestler.

But the question prevails, whether Askren can really use his funky wrestling style to wear out Maia without succumbing to a submission?

Co- Main Event - Michael Johnson and Stevie Ray

The co-main event will host another interesting fight in the Lightweight division with Michael Johnson and Stevie Ray facing each other to desperately gain some momentum in this division. One of the best strikers in the 155lbs division, Michael ‘The Menace’ Johnson, undoubtedly possesses the best speed and movement among the two in the fight. Stevie ‘Braveheart’ Ray, on the contrary, has been one of the oldest, experienced fighters in the UFC roster.

The “Workmanlike” beast might not be the best striker, neither is he incredibly fast, but he is tough and puts together a chain of combinations at a ridiculous rate which makes it hard for his opponents to read his next move.

The striking difference through experience is what makes this co- main event so compelling. Those who want to dismiss Johnson seeing Ray’s strength can do so mistakenly, as the ‘The Menace’ still remains dangerous and an unpredictable threat.
