UFC returned with UFC 269 today and delivered some exciting action. In the main event, champion Charles Oliveira submitted Dustin Poirier in the third round to retain the UFC Lightweight title.

Poirier and Oliveira started off the fight at an insane pace which saw both fighters landing some major strikes. It was Poirier that had the better outing with his power but the champion was showing no signs of slowing down and landed some kicks of his own. Oliveira tried to slow down the pace in the second round with some clinch work and was pushing for a takedown.

Things soon went to the ground with Oliveira on top. The Brazillian delivered some nasty ground and pound from the position as well to close the round strongly. Oliveira pounced early in the third round and managed to get the back of Poirier and submitted Poirier to retain the title.

Julianna Pena upsets Amanda Nunes

Nunes and Pena engaged in a chess game on the ground early in the first round itself after Pena was dropped by a jab. Pena was pushing for a kimura even though she was in the defensive position on the ground and closed the round by putting the champion in a spot.

Pena opened the round strongly in the second round and rocked Nunes with some huge punches. For probably the first time in the title run of Nunes, Nunes was being pushed back and Pena continued to pressure before landing a takedown and submitting Nunes with a rear-naked choke to produce a huge upset.

O'Malley continues his good run

In the opening bout of the main card, Sean O’Malley continued his good run with a first-round TKO finish against Raulian Paiva. With the win, O’Malley improved his winning streak to three fights.

Kai Kara France secured a huge win as he stopped former champion Cody Garbrandt in the first round itself. Geoff Neal and Santiago Ponzinibbio went the complete distance in their fight with Neal taking home the win in the end through a split decision.

In the preliminary fight card, Josh Emmett won the featured prelim via a unanimous decision when former champion Dominick Cruz also got a much-needed victory as he outclassed Pedro Munhoz. Tai Tuivasa and Bruno Silva also secured wins in the preliminary card.
