Indian Boxer Satish Kumar progressed into the quarter-finals of the Super Heavyweight Category at the Tokyo Olympics with a win over Ricardo Brown of Jamaica.
Satish started on a strong note and secured a clean sweep in the first round as all judges scored in favor of the Indian. Brown had some success in the opening minutes of the second round with his left hooks but ended up getting warned by the referee for using the side of the gloves.
The Jamaican then found some success with body shots as well before the referee stopped the fight due to a head butt. Satish also had some moments of his own in the round which gave him the round. With two rounds in his favor, Satish took the safe route in the third round and went in defense mode to sail through into a split decision win.
Last day, Pooja Rani had entered the quarter-finals in the Women’s Middleweight category by defeating Ichrak Chaib of Algeria in the Round of 16. Lovlina Borgohain is also in the quarter-finals following her win over Nadine Aptez of Germany. Mary Kom will now be looking to enter the Quarter-Finals today as she goes into action in the round of 16.
Earlier, Vikas Krishan, Manish Kaushik, and Ashish Kumar bowed out of the tournament after suffering defeats in their respective fights. Vikas, who was in action on Day 1 went down to SQM Okazawa of Japan in the Round of 32 when Manish lost to Luke McCormack of Great Britain.
Top seed Amit Panghal will be in action on Saturday 31 July 2021 at 7:30 AM IST when he fights Yuberjen Martinez of Colombia in the round of 16.
