India at Tokyo Olympics: Lovlina Borgohain secures a win over Nadine Apetz

Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain progressed into the quarter-finals of the Women's Welterweight Category after defeating Nadine Apetz of Germany in the Round of 16. 

The opening round went in favor of Lovlina who had the upper hand on the card of three out of five judges. The Indian boxer was making good use of her reach throughout the round and was having good success with her jabs which made it difficult for Nadine Apetz to close the distance. Though Nadine pushed harder in the second round, Lovlina had a slight advantage on the scorecard which raised the stakes for the third round. Lovlina delivered a solid performance in the third round as well which gave her the win and a spot in the Quarterfinals with a score of 3-2.

Last day, Ashish Kumar bowed out of the tournament after suffering a defeat to Erbieke Tuoheta of China in the Round of 32.  On Sunday, Mary Kom had booked her spot in the Round of 16 after securing a win over Miguelina Hernandez of the Dominican Republic. Mary Kom squared off against Hernandez on Sunday afternoon in the Round of 32 of the Flyweight category and secured a 4-1 win to advance.

Manish Kaushik, meanwhile, bowed out of the tournament following a split decision loss to Luke McCormack of Great Britain. On Day 1, Vikas Krishan Yadav had also suffered a defeat to SQM Okazawa of Japan in the Round of 32 of the Welterweight category.

Other boxers like Amit Panghal, Satish Kumar, and Simranjit Kaur had earlier got byes in their respective weight categories for the first round. Pooja Rani will be in action on Wednesday, 28 July 2021 in the Round of 16 in the Middleweight category. Pooja will be going up against Ichrak Chaib of Algeria in the showdown.
