Indian boxer Ashish Kumar bowed out of the Olympics after suffering a defeat to Erbieke Tuoheta of China in the Round of 32 of the Middleweight category.
Erbieke Tuoheta got a clean sweep in the first round of the showdown despite a strong showing from Ashish who had a great work rate in the round. The second round proved to be a similar story. Touheta even managed to produce a small cut in the face of Ashish who was constantly moving forward. Though it was a crucial third round for Ashish, Touheta kept things in his favor and fended off the attempts from the Indian. With the loss, the Olympic campaign of Ashish comes to an end.
Last day, Mary Kom had booked her spot in the Round of 16 after securing a win over Miguelina Hernandez of the Dominican Republic.
Mary Kom squared off against Hernandez on Sunday afternoon in the Round of 32 of the Flyweight category and secured a 4-1 win to advance. It proved to be a close match for the Indian boxer as Hernandez had her moments in the first two rounds. It was the third round that proved to be the decider and the experience of Kom proved to be the difference as she managed to bring home a win.
Manish Kaushik, meanwhile, bowed out of the tournament following a split decision loss to Luke McCormack of Great Britain. On Day 1, Vikas Krishan Yadav had also suffered a defeat to SQM Okazawa of Japan in the Round of 32 of the Welterweight category.
Other boxers like Amit Panghal, Lovlina Borgohain, Satish Kumar, and Simranjit Kaur had earlier got byes in their respective weight categories for the first round. Lovlina will be in action first among the group as she will be going up against Nadine Apetz of Germany in the Round of 16 in the Welterweight category on 27 July 2021.
