India at Tokyo Olympics: Mary Kom advances, Manish Kaushik bows out

Indian Boxing star Mary Kom advanced into the Round of 16 at the Tokyo Olympics after securing a win against Miguelina Hernandez of the Dominican Republic.

Mary Kom squared off against Hernandez on Sunday afternoon in the Round of 32 of the Flyweight category and secured a 4-1 win to advance. It proved to be a close match for the Indian boxer as Hernandez had her moments in the first two rounds. It was the third round that proved to be the decider and the experience of Kom proved to be the difference as she managed to bring home a win.

Manish Kaushik was in action against Luke McCormack of Great Britain in the round of 32 of the Lightweight category. McCormack won on the card of three judges in the first round when Kaushik won on the card of three judges in the second round making the third round an important one. McCormack ended up winning the same and advanced to the next round with a score of 4-1.

Last day, Vikas Krishan Yadav had bowed out of the tournament after suffering a defeat to SQM Okazawa of Japan in the Round of 32 of the Welterweight category.

Ashish Kumar will be in action on 26 July 2021 when Pooja Rani will step into the ring on 28 July 2021. Other boxers like Amit Panghal, Lovlina Borgohain, Satish Kumar, and Simranjit Kaur had earlier got byes in their respective weight categories for the first round.
