Former UFC champion Khabib Nurmagomedov has tested positive for COVID-19. Khabib was supposed to corner his teammate and protégé Saygid Izagakhmaev at ONE: Heavy Hitters last day but he was ruled out from the event after testing positive for the virus.

The Russian MMA star tested positive after landing in Singapore with his team and had to watch the fight from his hotel room as per ONE Championship CEO and Chairman Chatri Sityodtong. Talking to the media after the event, Chatri noted that Khabib felt terrible in the initial days after testing positive.

“This is a very unfortunate thing. Khabib landed in Singapore a few days ago, he was feeling ill when he landed. He tested positive for COVID in the PCR test and he is in his hotel room in Singapore right now. He and I have been talking every day. The first couple of days he felt terrible but today he is feeling better but he is still in his hotel room,” Chatri said.

He further went on to add that Khabib was complimentary of ONE Championship and the production quality of the event.

“He did watch the fight and he messaged me and he was really happy with Saygid. He also said that he was blown away by the production value at ONE from the stage to the light and sound to the camera angle, so he was very complimentary,” Chatri added.

Saygid, meanwhile, went on to secure a huge win in his ONE Championship debut as he submitted James Nakashima in the second round of their lightweight bout. He then went on to call out Shinya Aoki in the post-fight interview as well.
