ONE Championship star Garry Tonon believes that he could submit Khabib Nurmagomedov in a pure grappling match.

Tonon revealed the same during the ONE: BIG BANG Virtual Media Day where he was posed with the question about competing against the Russian superstar.

“I think if we ever had a pure grappling match, I’d pretty handily submit Khabib. The same way if I had a pure wrestling match against somebody who is an extremely dominant wrestler. More than likely, they would beat me,” he said.

The former ADCC Champion also went on to reveal the strategy that he would employ against Khabib if they were to meet in the mats.

“I think for Khabib, probably the thing that he doesn’t encounter more than anything else would be leg locks. It is a very underutilized thing in Mixed Martial Arts,” he added.

The possibility of a showdown between Tonon and Khabib has been a topic of debate for a long time and recent quotes from Tonon is expected to add fuel on the same.

Khabib Nurmagomedov, meanwhile, has been busy following the announcement of his retirement at UFC 254 having bought an MMA promotion in Russia. He also revealed that he will only compete again if he has permission from his mother.
