On Sunday, October 16 UFC rolled out UFC FIGHT NIGHT: GRASSO vs. ARAUJO from UFC APEX in Las Vegas. The matches pitting rookies against veterans made the card exciting and thrilling.
Viviane Araujo and Alexa Grasso, the top two women's flyweight contenders, traded heavy blows over all five rounds. Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Araujo was unable to use because Grasso's boxing controlled the flow of the fight. Grasso won a close main event by a unanimous decision.
"Of course I did enough to win tonight. I trained really hard for this. I knew she was going to try and take me down. I trained really hard, you need to be able to get up every time. She was a tough opponent, I hope you guys enjoyed the fight,” Grasso noted about the fight and the win.
In the co-main event, Jonathan Martinez brutalised Cub Swanson's guard with left kicks before putting his legs out for a TKO in the second round, ruining the Hall of Famer's bantamweight debut.
"I'm real emotional right now. I just work so hard for this and it's starting to pay off. He breathes, so I came in here and had a job to do. I know Dominic Cruz is in here, hopefully, he'll give me a chance,” Martinez called out the former UFC Bantamweight champion after the win.
Elsewhere, Tatsuro Taira of Japan increased his winning streak to 12 wins by arm-barting CJ Vergara in the second round. The Okinawan fighter, 22, who won $50,000 for the Performance of the Night, was unrelenting in his takedowns and subsequently dominated on the ground until he reached the finish.
Mana Martinez, a Filipino-Hispanic, demonstrated his punching ability against Brandon Davis in a thrilling bantamweight match. Martinez won on a split decision.
