On Saturday, President Trump congratulated the UFC fighter Jorge Masvidal as he watched from the stands.
In the Miami-Dade Arena, where Masvidal announced his retirement from mixed martial arts after falling to Gilbert Burns, Trump, 76, was seated in the front row.
Masvidal, a 38-year-old fighter from his hometown, announced his retirement during the post-fight interview in the ring after losing the co-main event of UFC 287 by unanimous decision. The American, a fervent Trump supporter, also praised the former president throughout his speech.
“Greatest president in the history of the world, I love that guy,” Masvidal said.
When Trump entered the Miami-Dade Arena, the audience exploded. UFC fighter Kevin Holland later approached Trump after defeating Santiago Ponzinibbio and appeared to speak to the 76-year-old through the cage.
Masvidal, 38, ends his career with a 35-17 record in professional mixed martial arts dating back to May 2003. Masvidal, however, established himself in the combat sports spotlight before making his UFC debut by taking part in the backyard street fights that the late Kimbo Slice made famous.
Masvidal competed for the UFC, Strikeforce, and Bellator, among other promotions, throughout the next 20 years after his MMA debut. Masvidal, a product of the Strikeforce merger, debuted in the UFC in April 2013 when he decisively defeated Tim Means.
Trump has previously been present at a UFC event. The former president attended UFC 244 in 2019 and UFC 264 in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he was sitting next to UFC Executive Vice President Dana White.

Although though Trump has a more than 20-year history with the UFC and its top executives, their relationship really took off during the 2016 presidential campaign.
