The Inner Circle 24: Baatarkhuu Opens Up On Humble Beginnings

Enkh-Orgil Baatarkhuu has come a long way from the rolling landscapes of Khovd, Mongolia, to the global spotlight.

The ONE Bantamweight MMA World Champion defends his 26 pounds of gold for the first time against undefeated fighter Elbek Alyshov in the main event of The Inner Circle 24 on Friday, July 31, streaming exclusively on live.onefc.com from Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.

But before the championship belt, before the Netflix appearance on Physical: Asia, and before the ONE Championship spotlight, there was a boy herding animals on the Mongolian steppe.

"I grew up herding sheep and goats in the beautiful landscape, riding horses, fetching water from the river, and collecting dried cow dung as fuel. Just like any other Mongolian boy," he said.

That upbringing in Khovd shaped the character of a fighter who would go on to claim the ONE Bantamweight MMA World Title via submission against Fabricio Andrade in his most recent outing.

The 37-year-old carries a 7-1 ONE record with five finishes into his first title defense, but the foundation of everything he has built was laid in the most humble of circumstances, held together by a mother whose belief in her son went far beyond what their finances could comfortably support.

"My mother was my biggest supporter. When I went to Ulaanbaatar to take part in my first taekwondo competition, my mother took out a payday loan and paid for my travel expenses. She worked as a nurse at the local hospital at the time and her salary wasn't very high," he explained.

The sacrifice behind that loan was not lost on the young Baatarkhuu, even then.

For a family living without financial comfort, the decision to borrow money to fund a child's sporting dream was not a small one. It was an act of belief.

"For a poor family like ours, taking a payday loan means making a lot of sacrifices. But my mother thought it was more important to support her son's dream," he added.
