In one of the most dramatic post-fight moments in recent history, striking legends Takeru Segawa and Rodtang Jitmuangnon came face-to-face inside the Circle at ONE 173, setting the stage for what could become the biggest farewell fight in martial arts.
Moments after demolishing Denis Puric with a devastating second-round TKO performance, former three-division K-1 Champion Takeru shocked the combat sports world by declaring his next bout would mark the end.
But Takeru had one final request before hanging up his gloves.
"My next fight will be the last fight of my competitive career. And Rodtang, if you are willing to be my dance partner for that last one, let's do it," Takeru announced to a thunderous applause.
The Thai megastar didn't make fans wait long for an answer.
Rodtang immediately entered into the Circle to confront his rival, accepting the challenge on the spot in a scene that captivated the arena.
The two warriors stood nose-to-nose before embracing in mutual respect, seemingly confirming the super-fight that fans have clamoured for.
"First of all, congratulations to Takeru. You were amazing tonight," Rodtang said. "If you would like to fight me next, if you would like me to be your last fight, I am all for it."
The potential retirement fight could find the perfect home in Tokyo, Japan. ONE Championship revealed during the ONE 173 broadcast that ONE 175 is scheduled for April 29 in the Japanese capital, offering Takeru the opportunity to close his storied career in front of his home fans.
ONE Championship Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong fuelled speculation about the matchup during the post-event press conference, though he stopped short of making it official.
"You know, I don't know, but I definitely want Rodtang to fight Takeru," Chatri explained. "I think that's a great time to put Rodtang versus Takeru II as Takeru's retirement fight. And I think that would break all records in Japan and be an incredible event."
