Taiga "Black Samurai" Orii did not grow up dreaming of fighting. He grew up dreaming of basketball. The half-Japanese, half-Ghanaian 30-year-old spent his formative years in Japan with no exposure to combat sports — and yet on 5 June, he walked out of Lumpinee Stadium with a US$100,000 ONE Championship contract.
The pivot began with a job. After university, Orii relocated to Cebu, the Philippines, to work as a Japanese translator. It was there, wandering into JBDream Fitness Gym out of pure curiosity, that he encountered MMA for the first time and realised it was something entirely different from what he had imagined.
He was hooked immediately — not by the violence, but by the intelligence required. A Japanese YouTuber and MMA fighter he admired had long explained the technical side of the sport, and seeing it applied in real time made everything click. The hobby began. The ambition would come later.
For two years, MMA was simply something Orii did after long days of translation work. Then he started competing on the Philippine amateur circuit in June 2023, and the results arrived fast. Seven finishes among his ten wins. A national featherweight title. And a ceiling that kept rising with every fight.
"The more I fought, the more it suddenly became like a possible dream," he said. He turned professional in September 2025, stopped his first three opponents, and earned the call from ONE Championship — an organisation that, as recently as a few years earlier, he had considered "way above the sky."
His promotional debut ended in a finish. So did his second fight — a bruising ground-and-pound TKO of Julian Mayorga at The Inner Circle 17 on 5 June. He has never been taken the distance as a professional. Every opponent. Every time. Finished.
The contract announcement left him speechless. He thought it was a bonus. When the word "contract" registered, he could not believe it. He still can barely. But the goals are already set. Bantamweight world champion. Better performances. And a name nobody will forget.
