Superlek Kiatmoo9 wants to start 2023 in triumphant fashion, and that means claiming the vacant ONE Flyweight Kickboxing World Championship.

The Thai contender was originally slated for action against Ilias Ennahachi this month at ONE Fight Night 6: Superbon vs. Allazov. Ennahachi, however, could not make the flyweight limit of 135lbs while hydrated, forcing him to relinquish his crown.

Superlek will now meet #5-ranked Daniel Puertas on Saturday, 14 January, at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand. While he was underwhelmed not to get his rematch against the Dutch-Moroccan later this week, his motivations remain untouched.

“I feel a bit disappointed that I can’t have a showdown with Ilias. I have been waiting for this rematch for two years. But I respect his decision,” Superlek said.

“He realizes he can't make weight. If he ignores this, it may adversely affect the organization, and his fans may be disappointed by him. But if we have a chance to face each other again, I will be happy with that.”

From the former king in Ennahachi to a top-five ranked Puertas, it’s a massive adjustment to make in such a short time frame.

Despite the small window, “The Kicking Machine” feels his new foe isn’t as tough an assignment as the former flyweight champ. If anything, Superlek feels more confident about getting the chance to wear ONE gold around his waist.

“It’s not a problem at all,” Superlek said. “Daniel Puertas is an aggressive fighter who loves to walk toward his foe, while Ilias’ style is hit-and-move. I think it is easier to fight with Daniel than Ilias because I can choose what I should hit and I can read his movement easier.

“Puertas’ strength is his fearsome punches. I have to watch his movement closely and prepare for an impact. But at the same time, he will leave a gap after he punches. This is his weakness. He can’t defend himself well after he throws a big punch, and that’s my chance to counter.”

The last 12 months provided plenty of positive outcomes for the 27-year-old, one including a thunderous stoppage of Walter Goncalves last August at ONE Fight Night 1.

Following the one-round blistering of the Brazilian, Superlek notched a pivotal victory over fierce rival Panpayak Jitmuangnon last December at ONE 164: Pacio vs. Brooks by unanimous decision.

After brilliant offensive displays against two touted opponents, the Buriram native expects a similar outcome against the aggressive Puertas.

“I don’t know how hard this guy can hit me, but I think I’m one of the heaviest hitters in the world. I think that I may have a high chance to knock him out if I get a nice, clean, heavy shot,” Superlek said.

“Personally, I think he is not a big deal for me, but I won’t be careless. I will try my best to treat the fans with an exciting match. And I hope to get my second KO in ONE.”
