U23 Asian champion Sumit clinched the silver medal in the 60kg Greco-Roman category at the Polyak Imre & Varga Janos Memorial 2025 wrestling tournament on Sunday in Budapest.
Sumit lost 5-1 in the final to Azerbaijan’s Nihat Mammadli, the reigning European and world champion in the non-Olympic 60kg weight class.
The Indian wrestler had a strong run to the final, defeating Sadyk Lalaev 9-3 in the pre-quarterfinals, Republic of Korea’s Dayhum Kim 7-4 via fall in the quarterfinals, and Kazakhstan’s Galym Kabdunassarov 10-1 in the semifinals.
India concluded the Budapest wrestling ranking series with a total of 10 medals: three gold, three silver, and four bronze.
Anil Mor added to India’s tally with a bronze in the Greco-Roman 55kg category, defeating Uzbekistan’s Ikhtiyor Botirov 7-4 in the medal match. Mor, who won gold at the Ulaanbaatar Open in May, advanced to the bronze medal bout through repechage after a quarterfinal loss to European champion Emin Sefershaev and a 7-0 win over Moldova’s Artiom Deleanu.
India’s other Greco-Roman wrestlers faced early exits. Neeraj (67kg) and Nitesh (97kg) were eliminated in the qualification rounds. Nishant (77kg) also fell in qualification, losing 9-0 to Hungary’s Róbert Fritsch, followed by a 4-0 defeat to Republic of Korea’s Boseong Kang in repechage.
The Polyak Imre & Varga Janos Memorial served as the fourth and final wrestling ranking series event of 2025. Points earned in Budapest will contribute to seeding for the 2025 World Wrestling Championships in Zagreb, Croatia, scheduled for September 13 to 21.
