The vacant ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Title has created a situation Rodtang Jitmuangnon spent years hoping to avoid, forcing him to face mentor and friend Nong-O Hama at ONE 173: Superbon vs. Noiri on 16 November.
Throughout his ONE Championship career, the Thai megastar has maintained one consistent stance regarding the 38-year-old legend who moved down from bantamweight to challenge for flyweight gold.
"I [didn't] want to fight him from the start. When I fought in Singapore, we met [for the first time], and we had a meal together. Every time we meet, we always respect one another. I have said that I never want to fight with Nong-O," Rodtang stated.
The former flyweight's reluctance stems from genuine admiration for Nong-O's influence on his career and life since joining the promotion.
"For Nong-O, since I got a contract with ONE Championship, he has always been the role model for both [fighting] and living life. The way he takes care of his body, he is the best," Rodtang explained.
Their relationship extends beyond typical fighter friendships, built on shared meals, mutual respect, and mentorship that has shaped Rodtang's approach to both competition and personal wellness.

The former eight-time ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai World Champion represents everything Rodtang aspires to be.
However, the vacant title eliminates any possibility of avoiding this encounter.
"When our paths cross, we have our duties. I'll need to do my best. I might be happy or maybe not. I don't know about this one. There's something deep inside," Rodtang said.
Regardless of who captures the vacant crown, the emotional toll of defeating someone so deeply respected may overshadow the celebration, making this one of ONE Championship's most bittersweet title fights.
