Junior middleweight prospect Nishant Dev (1-0, 1 KO) made an impressive start to his professional boxing career, securing a first-round knockout victory over Alton Wiggins (1-1-1) in his debut fight.
The 24-year-old from India dropped Wiggins twice during the opening round. Referee Robert Hoyle stopped the fight at 2:48 after Wiggins was sent to the canvas once again and appeared shaky upon rising.
Dev, a southpaw, displayed his power throughout the round, landing solid left hands that left Wiggins struggling to recover. "I was dreaming about this moment," Dev said after the fight. "I dedicate this fight to India. The road to the world championship now begins. I think I was excited for my pro debut, and I’m ready for my next fight."
Dev’s dedication to his training, which included three months of lockdown preparation, was evident in his performance. "Right now, my journey begins, and I’m ready for this. No one is a world champion from India. I want to be the first world champion from India," he added.
Prominent boxing promoter Eddie Hearn expressed confidence in Dev’s future, stating, “India now has a fighter that can become a world champion. Nishant can go all the way to become a world champion. We’ve got to keep him nice and active. This is our first India fighter, and someone that can become a world champion.”
With a dominant debut, Dev's future in the sport looks bright as he embarks on his journey toward the world championship.
