MMAFI Bantamweight National Champion Anas Shaikh successfully defended his title belt against MMAFI Flyweight National Champion Mohd. Zubair at the MMAFI Contender 2 main event this past weekend.
Last year, Anas Shaikh of Maharashtra won the MMAFI Bantamweight National Title with four wins at the MMAFI Nationals. Zubair who hails from Telangana, on the other hand, had won the MMAFI Flyweight National Title back in December 2021. He won 3 fights on his way to the title in the bracket which had 16 fighters.
The super fight between Zubair and Anas was booked by MMAFI’s Mayur Bansode as the main event for the MMAFI Contender 2 event which happened in Mumbai on July 23, 2022. The fight also had the Bantamweight title of Anas on the line to make matters more interesting.
The fight served as the headliner on the card which saw more than 80 athletes from across the nation competing. Though the hype was high with all the high adrenaline action that went down in the undercard, both Anas and Zubair lived up to the hype and delivered an exciting show for the fans in attendance.
The fight went the complete distance and, in the end, Anas has adjudged the winner via a unanimous decision. With the win, Anas retained his title and added a high-profile title defence to his resume.
As for Zubair, despite the loss, he is still the champion in his own weight class and it would be interesting to see what the future holds for him as he possibly returns to Flyweight in his next outing.
