Former ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Champion Jonathan Haggerty withdrew from the ongoing ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Grand Prix due to health concerns. Otherwise, he would have fought Walter Goncalves in the quarterfinals of said tournament.

However, he can keep his hopes of joining the competition alive if he wins over Amir Naseri in an alternate fight for the World Grand Prix. That contest will be part of the main card for ONE Fight Night 1: Moraes vs. Johnson II on 27 August at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

In an Instagram post, “The General” extended his apologies to Goncalves and to his fans for not being able to compete. He also thanked ONE Championship for taking care of his medical needs.

“I am profusely sorry to all the fans that I am unable to compete in the world Grand Prix. I am devastated. I will not let this define me! I will overcome this and be back where I belong,” Haggerty said.

But now that he is cleared to fight again, he will try to make up for the lost time by putting on a great show against Naseri.

Like Haggerty, Naseri would also like to keep one foot in the door after losing to Savvas Michael in the quarterfinals of the World Grand Prix. Therefore, the British striker is thrilled about having a great showdown to get him back on track.

“Next fight is going to be a good one. I’m intrigued to see what my opponent brings. But I can show you, I can bring some spinning elbows and maybe even a stoppage,” he said during the press conference for ONE Fight Night 1 at The Novo in Los Angeles, California.

While a win over Naseri will not guarantee him a chance to compete in the ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Grand Prix, he will be next in line if any of the finalists can’t participate.

Aside from the fight between Haggerty and Naseri, ONE Fight Night 1 will also feature the rematch between ONE Flyweight World Champion Adriano Moraes and mixed martial arts legend, Demetrious Johnson, as the card’s main event. ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai World Champion Nong-O Gaiyanghadao will also defend the title against veteran striker Liam Harrison.
