Jonathan Haggerty is still hoping for a possible showdown with Demetrious Johnson. This is despite his recent decision to leave the Flyweight Division in ONE Championship.
Speaking to MMA Super Fan, Haggerty noted that Johnson is someone that he looked up to through the years.
“Now I’m out of the flyweight division but I still feel the closest with the flyweight division. I’d love to go with ‘Mighty Mouse.’ I grew up watching him. He’s the GOAT, he’s the best in the world. There’s no doubt about it,” Haggerty said in the interview.
Demetrious Johnson had locked horns with Rodtang in a special rule fight earlier this year. In the fight which had rules alternating between Muay Thai Rules and MMA Rules, Johnson had secured a submission win.
ONE Championship revealed that there will be similar fights in the future as well. The showdown between Stamp Fairtex and Anissa Meksen which is set to happen soon will also have a similar rule set.
The special rules fight has opened doors for the stacked Muay Thai roster of ONE Championship to compete with the MMA stars.
As for Haggerty, he will now be competing at Bantamweight and as per him, it is now a bit more easier for him when it comes to weight cut.
“The main thing is, really man, I’m a lot happier, socializing a lot more, and yeah, a lot more weight. To get to flyweight, I was eating a lot of fish and mainly just fish. But now, I’m on the steak, I’m on the chicken. I can’t lie, I’m loving it! So we’ll just see how it gets on. I have faith in myself. My team has faith in me. I’m sure we’re gonna go out there and crush it and make a statement. And who knows what’s on the horizon?,” Haggerty noted
