Islam Makhachev is not happy about Charles Oliveira. The Dagestani star is set to fight for the UFC Lightweight title at UFC 280 in Abu Dhabi.
He is apparently not happy about the recent comments made by Oliveira and mocked the inability of Charles Oliveira in speaking English.
"I don't know, I don't understand this guy. He tried to always make [it about] money. But this guy doesn't speak English. Nobody understands this guy, he doesn't speak English. English is important if you wanna make money, you have to speak a language everybody understands. Nobody understands what he's saying,” he noted during his interview with Daniel Cormier and Ryan Clarke (h/t Sportskeeda).
Speaking further, Makhachev noted that the Brazilian has struggled in the past against grapplers and that his wins came against strikers.
"This is really [going to be] a tough fight for [Oliveira] because Dustin Poirier, Justin Gaethje, they never grapple. They're just striking. They're strikers, it's easy fight him, but he knows Islam Makhachev is a very hard fight for him,” the Russian added.
Will take him down fast, says Islam Makhachev
One of the most important questions regarding the fight would be whether Islam Makhachev can takedown Charles Oliveira. The Russian feels that he can do exactly that and believes that the takedown will happen faster than most people expect.
"I'm gonna take him down very fast. Listen, he finished all of his opponents, brother. But Tony Ferguson has a little bit of grappling, he did not finish him. Tony Ferguson [was a] hard fight for him, they [fought] all five rounds because Tony Ferguson knows a little bit of grappling,” Makhachev detailed.
Makhachev is currently on a 10-fight winning streak in the UFC right now. His last fight came against Bobby Green back in February 2022 and prior to that, he had secured a submission win over Dan Hooker. When he fights Oliveira in Abu Dhabi, Makhachev will be looking to bring back the UFC Lightweight title to Russia.
Charles Oliveira, on the other hand, is 33-8 in his professional MMA career. He is on an 11-fight winning streak right now. Over the course of his last five fights, Oliveira secured wins over Justin Gaethje, Dustin Poirier, Michael Chandler, Tony Ferguson and Kevin Lee. Oliveira was stripped of the UFC Lightweight title before his fight against Gaethje after he failed to make weight for the fight.
The Brazilian has been vocal about wanting to reclaim the title and recently noted that the arrogance of Islam Makhachev and his team will work against them. Additionally, Oliveira also noted that he would call out former UFC champion Khabib Nurmagomedov if he secures a win over Islam at the event.
