Indian boxers create history with 3 bronze medals at World Boxing Championship

Indian boxers have brought home three bronze medals from the IBA Men's World Boxing Championship 2023 held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, which saw participation from 538 boxers representing 107 countries. Deepak Kumar, Mohammed Hussamuddin, and Nishant Dev made their country proud by clinching bronze medals in their respective categories.

Deepak Kumar, a 2019 Asian silver medallist in the 51kg category, fought a hard-fought semifinal against France's two-time Worlds bronze medallist Billal Bennama. Despite a slow start, Deepak showcased remarkable resilience and made a comeback in the second round before losing 3-4 in a closely contested bout. Nishant Dev (71kg), who showed an aggressive approach throughout the tournament, also put up a brave fight but lost 2-5 against the reigning Asian champion Aslanbek Shymbergenov of Kazakhstan.

Hussamuddin had to withdraw from the quarter-finals due to a knee injury, but still managed to secure a bronze medal in his debut World Championships campaign. All three boxers will be awarded USD 50,000 each for their impressive performances.

India has made history with this achievement, as it's the first time the country has won three medals at a single edition of the tournament. Deepak, Hussamuddin, and Nishant join the ranks of the ten World Championships medallists from India, and their exceptional performances have created much excitement and anticipation as India looks forward to the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games next year.

The Indian boxing fraternity is ecstatic with the performance of its athletes and has been sending congratulatory messages to the three boxers. This accomplishment comes after a challenging time when the world is facing the COVID-19 pandemic, and sporting events have been adversely affected.
