In a matchup steeped in martial arts lore, Holly Holm is set to face off against two-time Olympic judo gold medalist Kayla Harrison at UFC 300, an event of monumental significance. Holm, who famously rose to UFC stardom by dethroning Olympic judo bronze medalist Ronda Rousey in 2015, sees no grand conspiracy in facing another judo powerhouse. Although Rousey and Harrison share a background in judo, Holm believes they possess distinct styles and approaches to the sport.

"Kayla Harrison's had her ground and pound and Ronda would always kind of reach for the arms," remarked Holm in a recent interview with MMA Fighting. "It’s just different. Their styles are different but also a lot of similarities."

While both Rousey and Harrison have demonstrated a preference for ground battles, Harrison's striking has evolved, albeit with a reliance on her grappling prowess. Holm, known for her striking abilities, acknowledges Harrison's improvements but remains prepared for a well-rounded opponent.

The matchup's scrutiny extends beyond the octagon, notably focusing on Harrison's debut in the bantamweight division. Having primarily competed at higher weight classes, Harrison's transition to 135 pounds has garnered attention. However, Holm remains unfazed by the weight dynamics, focusing instead on preparing for the best version of her opponent.

"I want to be prepared for the fastest, strongest, most conditioned Kayla Harrison there is," asserted Holm. "I don’t want to put it in my head 'oh she may not be strong enough or she might be depleted.' No, I need to beat her at her strongest."

With the hype surrounding Harrison's UFC debut reaching fever pitch, Holm acknowledges the stakes. A victory not only holds personal significance but also propels her closer to championship contention, particularly given her previous wins over current champion Raquel Pennington.

"This is definitely a fight that can set that path in the right direction for me," Holm affirmed. "I only want to fight when I know [being champion] is still obtainable."

As UFC 300 approaches, anticipation builds for a showdown that promises to be both historic and decisive in shaping the future of women's MMA.
