Middleweight behemoth Gilbert “Giba” Galvao hasn’t competed under ONE Championship’s lights since 2019, but the Brazilian is back to make a statement.

Galvao’s return comes this Saturday, 14 January, at ONE Fight Night 6: Superbon vs. Allazov, where the powerhouse immediately enters the fray against former two-division world champ Aung La N Sang in a 215-pound catchweight competition.

The titan was last seen in action against ONE middleweight king Reinier de Ridder in June 2019 at ONE: LEGENDARY QUEST, and Galvao is relishing the opportunity against “The Burmese Python.”

UPDATE: Aung La N Sang finishes Galvao in the first round at ONE Fight Night 6

“I am very excited about my return to ONE. It’s going to be really cool to do this fight. I was a little absent, but now I’m back, and I’m very motivated and excited about this opportunity to fight in ONE Championship again,” the 40-year-old said.

An absence the length of “Giba’s” would concern some, especially when returning against an opponent of such a high caliber, but the 38-fight veteran wouldn’t have it any other way.

Holding a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and three state championships in the grappling discipline, Galvao is confident in the threat he poses against the Myanmar icon.

“As I said, I’ve been following Aung La N Sang’s career for a long time. He’s a knockout artist, he kicks really well, but I hope to surprise him. I had very little time to train for this fight, I think two weeks, but I’m believing in my training and my experience to put on a good fight,” Galvao said.

“I haven’t fought for a long time, but I know I have better takedowns than him and a better ground game than him. Those are my most dangerous weapons.”

A professional MMA fighter since 2006, the man with 30 victories under his belt feels he still has a lot to offer in ONE.

Utilizing the tools he’s amassed over 17 years of competition, Galvao plans to put his submission skill set to use and shock the division in this highly anticipated collision.

“I’m going to try to corner him, use a grinding game to put him down, and look for the submission,” he said.

“There’s no secret. I already know his game, and I hope to put on a great fight. I am confident in a victory.”
