GAMMA Asian Pacific MMA Championship: India win 17 Medals, list of medal winners

Team India won a total of 17 Medals at the 2022 GAMMA Asian Pacific MMA Championship and finished third in the rankings.

Sumit Bhyan and Niranjan Phanjoubam win gold medals for India

India won two gold medals thanks to Sumit Bhyan and Niranjan Phanjoubam. Sumit won the gold medal in the Lightweight MMA category while Niranjan secured the medal in the Featherweight Striking MMA category.

Sumit secured a dominant first-round submission win over Bakhtiyar Kassymov of Kazakhstan in the finals to earn his medal. The former GAMMA World Championship Silver Medallist was also awarded the best fighter award and a ONE Lumpinee Contract at the event.

Elsewhere, Niranjan secured three wins on his way to the medal. In the first round, he overcame Shergazy Sakyev of Kyrgyzstan and in the semi-finals, Niranjan outclassed Evans De Assunaco of East Timor.

The Indian then secured a win over Ibraim Khassuyev in the finals to earn the gold medal for India. Interestingly, both the fighters train out of KOI Combat Academy under Coach Vishal Seigell, who had earlier produced India’s first Senior MMA World Champion Surbala Laishram.

Silver and Bronze Medals Gallore

India won a total of 4 Silver Medals and 11 Bronze Medals at the event. Weshi Laki won the Silver Medal in the -115 LBS MMA category while Lomdik That won the Silver Medal in the -115 LBS Striking MMA Category.

Thakur Singh Jaidev secured himself a silver medal in the -185 LBS Striking MMA category as former GAMMA World Championship Silver Medallist Indiyana B secured another silver medal. This time around, Indiyana won the medal in the -145 LBS Striking MMA category.

Diyo Matam Rimo, who impressed in the tournament by picking up a win, settled for Bronze Medal in the -135 LBS Striking MMA Category. Shebin Ibrahim also had secured a win in the MMA Welterweight bracket which earned him a bronze medal.

Kazakhstan reigns supreme

Kazakhstan won ten gold medals as part of their total of 25 medals, living up to their pre-event reputation as the favourites to take first place in the medals table. This put Kazakhstan far ahead of Kyrgyzstan, which came in second place and won 6 gold medals for a total of 11.
