Aliff Sor Dechapan delivered the performance of his life at The Inner Circle 23, knocking out striking legend Sam-A Gaiyanghadao in the main event to claim the ONE Interim Strawweight Muay Thai World Championship and a US$50,000 performance bonus in a historic moment for Malaysian martial arts.
The victory was built on composure and precision. Aliff's corner kept him grounded throughout, and the 22-year-old executed the game plan with a maturity that belied his years.
"My [corner] told me to stick to my game plan and stay calm. If the opportunity to finish the fight came, I should take it, but if it wasn't there, I shouldn't force anything," he said.
When the opportunity did come, Aliff took it without hesitation, putting Sam-A on the canvas in a moment that will be replayed across Malaysian martial arts history for generations.
The magnitude of defeating a fighter of Sam-A's legendary stature is not lost on the new champion, and the interim status of the belt does nothing to diminish what he has achieved.
"To me, this interim World Title belt feels just like a real World Championship because defeating a legend like Sam-A is not something that happens every day," he explained.
With the interim belt now around his waist, Aliff's attention turns immediately to the next and most important chapter. Reigning ONE Strawweight Muay Thai World Champion Prajanchai PongSuphan PK holds the undisputed gold, and a unification bout between the two would crown an undisputed king of the division.
Aliff has crossed paths with Prajanchai on multiple occasions without ever fighting in the ring, and that is something he is determined to change.
"I have already stood face-to-face with Prajanchai several times, and I hope this time we finally get to fight, for real. I'm ready to face him. I need to study what he will bring into the fight and make sure my body is fully prepared," he added.
