ONE Championship returned with ONE: Battleground III today and one of the most interesting fights on the card was the showdown between Tial Thang of Myanmar and Song Min-Jong of South Korea.
Song tried to push Thang against the cage early in the first round itself only to get taken down to the ground sometime later. The fighters went back to standing sometime later and Song managed to trouble Thang with his kicks. The South Korean got a takedown of his own with just one minute to go in the round and almost got a submission.
The second round started off with both fighters throwing leather. Song and Thang landed some huge blows before a takedown from Thang. A takedown attempt from Song compromised his neck at one point but he managed to recover quickly. When things got back to standing, Thang landed some good shots which turned the fight in his favor. The clock, however, came to the rescue of Song who was visibly tired.
Song made a strong return in the opening minutes of the third round and landed a takedown. Thang once again turned the fight around with his cage pressure. He also got a takedown at the end of the third minute and worked on the guard. The South Korean, however, transitioned and got the back of Thang but failed to finish from the position. In the end, the judges ruled in favor of Song Min Jong.
Tial Thang started off his professional MMA career with ONE Championship back in 2019 when he secured a win over Rin Saroth. He then defeated Woon Gyeom Kim in a unanimous decision as well. The third win of Thang came in February 2021 when he defeated Paul Lumihi via second-round submission.
Song Min-Jong, meanwhile, came into the fight with a professional record of 11-8 to his name and had suffered a defeat to Geje Eustaquio recently. He had secured two wins in the ONE Warrior Series prior to this.
The main event of ONE: Battleground III features striking maestros Sitthichai “Killer Kid” Sitsongpeenong and Tawanchai PK.Saenchai Muaythaigym, who’ve agreed to meet in a ONE Super Series featherweight Muay Thai contest after their original opponents were forced to withdraw.
In the co-main event, newly signed Chinese mixed martial artist “The Prince” Banma Duoji will make his highly anticipated promotional debut.
