The ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia has captured the attention of the entire world. In fact, a long list of MMA fighters has also expressed their take on the situation.
One such take came from UFC Middleweight Sean Strickland last day through Twitter. Strickland compared the situation in Ukraine to that of in Afghanistan and added that Ukraine to ‘bend the knee’ and become Russian.
"Ukraine should just bend the knee and become Russian... I understand it sucks and yes you could win..... but do you really want to be the new Afghanistan for the next 30 years??? Not saying it's right but this hard pill to swallow will be better in the end,” he wrote on Twitter.
The controversial take from Strickland understandably did not sit well with a lot of people and it forced former UFC Champion Jan Blachowicz to respond. The Polish MMA star reminded Strickland of the history of Eastern Europe.
"Would you? It is easy to give away someone else's independence... The history of the Eastern European region is full of struggle and suffering. Ukraine - as a country and as a people - has endured much. Their resistance is understandable and admirable. Freedom,” Jan replied to the post from Sean Strickland.
Despite the backlash, Strickland stood firmly by his statement and went on to explain why he wrote such a tweet.
"Omg Sean said bend the knee’, yes you f**king idiots. All You’re going to do is sit behind your phone and tweet. You idiots gonna go pick up a rifle?? Shoot Russians from apartment buildings before it gets leveled, while the innocent family living under you gets killed?! Nope,” he wrote.
