Ritu Phogat made her ONE championship debut last day at ONE: Age of Dragons and secured an impressive first round TKO win at the event. She was dominant throughout the fight where she finished Nam Hee Kim of South Korea through ground and pound.
The former Commonwealth Games Medallist noted after the fight that her only aim is to win the ONE Atomweight World Championship.
“I have only one goal and that’s to win the ONE Atomweight World Championship for my country. That’s why I chose A.R. Rahman’s ‘Vande Mataram’ as my walkout song, listening to it fills me with enthusiasm and makes me want to do something for India. For me it’s all about becoming the first Indian world champion in MMA,” she said.
With the ONE Atomweight championship currently with Angela Lee, it means that Ritu could be on a collision course with Lee, who has been one of the most dominant champions in ONE Championship history.
“I am going back to Singapore where my training will continue in Evolve MMA. I hope to get back in the ring soon and down the line, I want to challenge the current champion Angela Lee for the world title,” Ritu added.
While it might be early days to say how Ritu might perform against Lee, considering how she performed at Age of Dragons, Ritu will indeed be a threat to Lee somewhere in the near future.
