LockerRoom India Year in Review: The Major Events that happened in 2020

2020 is in the books and despite the global pandemic; it was a busy year for the combat sports circuit in India.

A long list of developments happened across the twelve months of 2020. We’ve been fortunate enough to cover a lot of inspiring stories from the Indian Combat Sports community and we’ll be listing down the major events of each month below.

January 2020:

• Puja Tomar Fights Stamp Fairtex at ONE Championship
• WFC hosts WFC III in Kozhikode with proceedings going to Charity
• Asha Roka fights Gina Inong at ONE: Fire and Fury
• Hyderabad hosts Naresh Surya Classic India Open MMA championship

February 2020:

• 4^th Muay-Thai title belt championship held in Kozhikode
• Anish Shetty secures Flying Knee KO win in his Muay-Thai Fight in Thailand
• Ayushman Mukherjee secures three wins in four Muay-Thai Fights in Thailand
• PCFL hosts PCFL 2 in Haryana
• Ritika Poojary and Arshiyan Memon represent India at TFC 4 in Thailand, Arshiyan secures a win as well
• Mumbai hosts MMA event at Yuva Khel Summit
• Surya Sagar gets a TKO win in his Muay-Thai fight in Thailand
• Susovan Ghosh, Manthan Rane, and Rana Rudra Pratap Singh fights at ONE Warrior Series 10, Manthan and Rana secure wins at the event
• ADCC India happens in Delhi, Crosstrain Fight Club emerges on top of the standings
• Ritu Phogat defeats Wu Chiao Chen at ONE: King of the Jungle
• Dubai hosts Matrix Fight Night 4, Pawan Maan wins the main event when Anshul Jubli gets a dominant win, Sumeet Khade produces another head-kick KO

March 2020:

• Soul of Warriors roll out SOW 1, Bonjovi wins the main event against Ishan Das
• Vaibhav Shetty gets Bronze Medal at 2020 IMMAF Oceania Open MMA Championship
• Surya Sagar suffers a controversial decision defeat in his Muay-Thai fight in Thailand

May 2020:

• Multiple-time Wushu World Championship Medalist Surya Bhanu Pratap Singh announces transition to MMA, reveals he will fight at SOW

July 2020:

• Priya Saini, Aarti Khatri, Kushal Vyas, and Mohammed Farhad signs with MTK Global
• Jason Ramesh Solomon and Mannan Dattah announce India’s First Online MMA course

August 2020:

• Mohammed Farhad signs extension deal with BRAVE CF
• PFL reveals that they have scouted Indian MMA fighters for the upcoming season
• Kantharaj Agasa signs with ONE Championship
• PCFL 3 happens in Haryana

September 2020:

• Atin Gaur represents India in Muay-Thai in Thailand
• PFL signs multi-year broadcast deal with Eurosport India
• Ariz Ahmad Khan represents India at BRAVE CF 42

October 2020:

• Roshan Mainam and Rahul Raju represent India at ONE: Reign of Dynasties, Roshan secures a win
• Ritu Phogat defeats Nou Srey Pov at ONE: Inside the Matrix
• Atin Gaur fights the iconic Saiyok Pumphanmuang at Thai: Fight Begins in Thailand, suffers a defeat
• Nashik plays host to Hero Pro Fight Night 2, Sultan Kokni wins the main event

November 2020:

• The two-year USADA Suspension of the First Indian Born UFC Fighter Bharat Kandare comes to an end
• Roar Championship hosts an event in Manipal, Syed Abid takes the main event, Kaushik Saikumar, Ankush, Arjun AJ, Ajith, Vishnu Warrier, and Suhas progress to the next stage
• Balkrishna Shetty turns WMC promoter
• Fraggingmonk Promotions host inaugural event in Bangalore, Vaibhav Shetty crowned WKN champion
• PCFL 2^nd Indian Open MMA championship happens in Haryana

December 2020:

• Ritu Phogat defeats Jomary Torres at ONE: BIG BANG
• Matrix Fight Night rolls out Matrix Fight Night 5 in Dubai, Pawan Maan defeats Sandeep Dahiya in Main Event, Anshul Jubli defeats Srikant Sekhar in Co-Main Event, Sumeet Khade produces Flying Knee KO
• Hero Fight Night 3 happens in Nashik, Hemant Wadekar returns with a win
• AIMMAF hosts Gujarat State MMA Open Championship
• Bidang MMA and Fitness hosts Club Wars
• Matrix Fight Night announces events in Russia, UK, Dubai, and India for 2021
• Leverage Fight Night IX happens in Delhi, Aman Gusain of Warrior’s Cove MMA crowned champion
• MMA India wins Most Proactive Federation Award at IMMAF Awards 2020
• Indian MMA fighter Kartikay Kaushik picks up a win in Vietnam
