UFC 328 Results: Sean Strickland regains middleweight title, Joshua Van retains

Sean Strickland reclaimed the UFC middleweight championship with a split-decision victory over Khamzat Chimaev in the main event of UFC 328 on May 10 at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

The event drew a sold-out crowd of 17,783 and generated a gate of $7.52 million, the highest in arena history.

Chimaev controlled much of the opening round with his wrestling, taking Strickland down and maintaining dominant position throughout the frame. Strickland responded in the second round by stuffing takedown attempts and spending time in top position. The fight then shifted primarily to the feet, where Strickland's jab and volume striking helped him remain competitive throughout the championship rounds.

After five rounds, judges awarded Strickland a split-decision victory by scores of 47-48, 48-47 and 48-47, making him a two-time UFC middleweight champion.

In the co-main event, UFC flyweight champion Joshua Van successfully defended his title with a fifth-round TKO victory over Tatsuro Taira in a bout that earned Fight of the Night honors.

The championship clash marked the first UFC title fight contested between two fighters of Asian descent who were both born in the 2000s. Taira enjoyed success with his wrestling and control throughout the contest, while Van consistently landed the more damaging strikes. Van increased his body attack in the later rounds before securing the stoppage at 1:32 of the fifth round.

Performance of the Night bonuses went to Jim Miller and Yaroslav Amosov. Additional finish bonuses were awarded to King Green, Ateba Gautier, Grant Dawson and Baisangur Susurkaev.
